Our Fully Rigged Toboggan may be the most winter hardy and versatile sled we offer. Originally designed as a dogsled for use in harsh winters from Northern Canada up to the Arctic, this hardy wooden toboggan feels just as at home being towed behind a snowmobile. This is our most common product for trappers and hunters of the North, but we are finding that many love the aesthetics and have found it is great for pulling family and an all-around fun “cabin sled”!
We extended the sturdy red oak design of The Winter Essential Toboggan into a firm back board -- here an extra rider can stand on the sled, hang on tight to the back and supervise the snowmobile load or look out over the dog team. We also include a custom steel snowmobile hitch with black enamel finish and a heavy duty canvas wrap. The wrap allows for enhanced storage on longer freighting expeditions -- wrapping in hundreds of pounds of camping gear, animal traps, mining equipment or your most precious commodity, your family.

Like The Winter Essential, this sled measures roughly 13 feet long with 9 feet on the flat. The four board base makes for a 22 inch wide platform with hardy ropes running down either side. Our craftsman’s signature linseed oil finish ensures that the wood stays sealed in from the elements, preserving its beauty and strength with very little maintenance. As with our other toboggan sleds, the oak bottom becomes polished with consistent use and our signature curl ensures that heavy loads ride high and easy rather than pulling through stiff snowbanks. The result is a sled that tows smoothly, loads smoothly and turns easily in any variety of snow conditions.
100 years ago in those storied days of White Fang and Sam McGee, a toboggan in the shed was more common and more useful than a car in the garage. Unfortunately, we can’t go back in time a century to compare our notes directly -- but outside of time travel, we've done everything possible to make sure this storied tool remains alive and well used. Through our commitment to oral tradition, our attention to detail, and our constant communication with customers, we’re fairly sure that our toboggan sleds are the most authentic product available. Go ahead, Google all you want, ask around with the old timers -- you’ll only hear the same thing. No one in the world makes a toboggan quite like ours. This is a snow sled built for serious outdoorsmen and women -- a tool for people who embrace the winter months even when the trails are swept with harsh winds and the temperature drops well below freezing. Of course, you don't have to run the Iditarod or live off the land to be a serious outdoorsman. You only have to ride on the back of a toboggan and feel the cold wind sweeping against your rosy red cheeks.
The history of Northern Toboggan Co is itself rooted in the history of our Traditional Toboggan and the history of the people who rely on these sleds. Our northern customers are people who live and work on the land. These folks face the harshest winter environments in North America as a matter of lifestyle. For hundreds of years, wooden toboggans have been their means of travel and freighting, whether they are trapping, hunting, mushing or freighting supplies below the tree line and across the barren lands. These oak board toboggans aren’t a luxury good -- rather, they are a basic necessity. With a hardy sled, these people are able to live and to thrive on the land.
Some traditions can become outdated; fading as they are surpassed by newer technologies, but this is not the case with our northern customers. They report that plastic or even fiberglass sleds simply do not withstand the elements like wooden sleds. Often, other sleds won’t last a single season. Our traditional wood toboggans continue to perform over the course of many seasons. They become a part of the far north lifestyle and part of the family through their service and longevity. Oh, and they follow a snow machine with elegance to boot!
Despite our traditional roots, we have discovered in over twenty years in business that there are many places where the Traditional Toboggan can find use, even beyond intense on-the-land lifestyles. Many of our customers throughout the northern regions of the United States enjoy towing their cabin supplies on our beautiful Fully Rigged Toboggan. Others find that their grandchildren love the feeling of standing on the back, holding tight while they overlook the cur or the wintry trail that grandma or grandpa pull them on. Like a new Labrador puppy waddling around the park, we have found that a wooden toboggan full of kids will put a smile on anyone’s face.
No matter how you choose to use your Traditional Toboggan, we guarantee that it was made in Northern Minnesota, in our family shop, by a man committed to world class craftsmanship.
