One of our more recent additions to the toboggan sled family, the Hand Sled came about much like our Downhill Toboggan-- as a response to requests from avid outdoorsmen. In this case, ice-fishermen were the ones voicing their needs the loudest. We designed this sled for down to earth winter-anglers who don't use ATVs or snowmobiles to get out to their favorite spot on the ice. The type of fisherman who appreciates the simple things in life: a peaceful day on the ever-quiet winter lakes and the feeling of smooth resistance in your sled as you tow it home for the day’s end, heavy with walleye. We also have found that many love our Hand Sled as a simple pull sled for around the cabin. All you need to know is it pulls like a dream!

With this Hand Sled, the overall width is 24 inches with 60 inches of length. The surface area of the sled’s deck measures in slightly smaller, at roughly 19-1/2 inches wide and 48 inches long. Much like our larger Freight Sled collection, the elevated deck allows the runners to twist and turn, forming itself to the trail. The deck is bolted down to the two solid oak runners (2-1/2 inches wide) using milled steel bridges and brackets. The result is a flexible sled that pulls smooth and easy even under heavy loads. And of course, with our signature red oak and linseed oil finish, we never compromise on the sled’s beauty.
The general consensus has been that a collapsible fish house fits well laid out flat on the sled, then on top, a tackle box or crate can rest, holding any other foods supplies and equipment. Alongside the crate, or on top of the load, a power auger can be strapped or bungeed down to the elevated deck. Of course, the final organization of a fisherman’s outfit remains a function of individual preference. Everybody has their own perfect balance-- and we’re confident that our Hand Sled offers the support necessary.
With this sled, you get a smaller, more concentrated dose of our quality craftsmanship with the same high level of utility. A compact and lightweight sled that fits easily into a vehicle, but remains strong and stable enough to handle all the gear and equipment for a day on the ice; an easy to transport, easy to pack sled that glides over land and ice even while fully rigged. A sled that makes sure the trek out on the water is free of all worry and ripe with anticipation.
Here at Northern Toboggan Co we are indebted to generations of craftsmen who came before us. Those early frontiersmen and backwoods innovators developed the versatile toboggan sleds we now replicate with our traditional design which was passed to our craftsman from his mentor. When people first began slow-bending boards and pushing the limit of overland snow travel, they were defining the legacy of the wood toboggan. Today we do our best to continue in that spirit of innovation by keeping our commitment to the individual woodsman and making sure that any toboggan they need can be made available. Our custom options showcase the true value of a small dedicated workshop. With our craftsman’s steady-handed expertise and our commitment to using quality material, there are almost no limits on the possible variations for a basic snow sled.
If you have an idea for a new custom modification or you simply want to test what we are capable of, you should not hesitate to call the Sled Maker. His number is 218.386.3005.
We are more than happy to work with businesses developing new toboggan styles which tailor to particular brands and locations. So long as we are able to maintain our characteristic rugged simplicity, we will continue to push the boundaries of what a toboggan sled can become.
Building on the framework of our larger, traditional wood toboggans, we crafted our Downhill Toboggan series to retain its rugged durability and utility even while catering to family use. We built a sled that can haul a chord of wood from the shed in 20 below, but more importantly, we built a sled that your parents and children and grandchildren can all use and cherish -- the type of toboggan you’d one day be proud to pass down.
Before we designed the Downhill Toboggans, the Dene people and landsmen from Northern Canada were our primary customers. Over long seasons of hard use, they rely on the Traditional Toboggan for their livelihood. As they venture across frozen barren land or the thick wooded bush, they need a tool so dependable and sturdy that it could be counted as a member of the family.
As much as many of us might fantasize, we can’t all lead the purest lifestyle of our northern clients -- we can’t afford to forsake our friends and communities to pursue those rugged horizons. However, we at Northern Toboggan Co have come to realize that even though our lifestyles are a bit less intense, we continue to find many opportunities to explore and adventure on the land. Every day, no matter where we build our livelihood, we continue to build a unique relationship with these snow covered forests we call home. That’s why we built the Downhill Toboggan. We wanted to make sure that all of our customers, not just the backwoods survivalist, have the tools they need to enjoy their time outside exploring the north wilderness. We believe that for every family who loves the outdoors, there's room for one of our wooden toboggans.
