Like our other toboggan sleds, we still use the same quality red-oak, but unlike our other options, we’ve managed to keep the weight of this sled at a bare 25 pounds. Because when you’re hot-tenting on the trail for days at a time, you only want to carry as much weight as you absolutely need. Still, despite the reduced weight, we've managed to keep plenty of space for storage. The narrow frame of our sled is measured at a full 12 feet by 14 inches -- 2 feet longer than our traditional models and only 2/3 as wide. The sled is built from just two curled boards, both lightweight and flexible, and tightly bolted together. While the Hand Toboggan follows closely behind its lead, the length of the sled distributes the weight of its cargo while the narrow width minimizes friction.

While not our most flashy toboggan sled, the Hand Toboggan remains one of our all-time favorites. Unlike our Traditional and Downhill toboggans, this model has been designed for the outdoorsman that travel long distances over ground without the help of snowmobiles or sled dogs. Rather than those conventional travelers, this toboggan is for true lovers of winter solitude, also known as winter trekkers. We designed this beauty with the help of Garrett and Alexandra Conover, the authorities of winter trekking and co-authors of Snow Walkers Companion: Winter Camping Skills for the North. Their work is considered the bible for winter trekkers and we are grateful to be recommended as a provider of traditional hand toboggans in their most recent book version.
Despite their beauty and traditional roots, many diehard winter campers have moved away from wood toboggans in favor of cheaper and lighter plastic sleds. We can understand that the constant pressure to shed weight might lead some to forsake the superior durability and the beauty of our products, for less expensive alternatives that glide well with little waxing maintenance needed. Still, we have remained committed to our original construction knowing that we can only continue to be competitive if we continue to produce an exceptional product.
With this sled, it doesn’t matter if you are spending a week cold camping, huddled next to your fire, or whether you are simply taking the afternoon to escape from the noise of everyday life. Whether you are exploring the beauty of winter woods as an observer, or whether you are trying to tap your own primordial best -- we want to make sure that you don’t think twice about the tools behind you – instead we want you to save your worries for more important things and especially for the trail ahead.
Here at Northern Toboggan Co we are indebted to generations of craftsmen who came before us. Those early frontiersmen and backwoods innovators developed the versatile toboggan sleds we now replicate with our traditional design which was passed to our craftsman from his mentor. When people first began slow-bending boards and pushing the limit of overland snow travel, they were defining the legacy of the wood toboggan. Today we do our best to continue in that spirit of innovation by keeping our commitment to the individual woodsman and making sure that any toboggan they need can be made available. Our custom options showcase the true value of a small dedicated workshop. With our craftsman’s steady-handed expertise and our commitment to using quality material, there are almost no limits on the possible variations for a basic snow sled.
If you have an idea for a new custom modification or you simply want to test what we are capable of, you should not hesitate to call the Sled Maker. His number is 218.386.3005.
We are more than happy to work with businesses developing new toboggan styles which tailor to particular brands and locations. So long as we are able to maintain our characteristic rugged simplicity, we will continue to push the boundaries of what a toboggan sled can become.

The Luxury Wooden Toboggan is modeled after our original cargo Traditional Toboggans. These originals have been thoroughly tested through decades of use in the harsh Canadian North. By extending these traditional principles, we created the highest quality downhill toboggan by design, construction, materials, and beauty. It has to be to have our brand. You won't find another toboggan with a story and quality like this.
Carefully building these toboggans for downhill sledding, our Craftsman laminates every wooden toboggan crosspiece in order to withstand decades of repeated twisting. The gradual initial curl allows our downhill sled to ride higher, rather than plow into snowdrifts and in powdery conditions. We have learned from generations of craftsmen and have continued to perfect a natural bending process that allows us to use thicker boards. Constructing toboggans of red oak also provides a beautiful and durable grain perfect for winter snow sleds.
