Making Family Heirlooms and Memories

Do you have any special heirlooms in your family? Perhaps you have a painting made by one of your ancestors or a hand-sewn quilt made by a great-great-great-grandmother. Handcrafted family heirlooms are of particular sentimental value, connecting the current generation to one in the distant past. What’s interesting is that at the time the item was created, the maker probably didn’t have in mind what generations down the years, down the generations, would think about it.

This is especially true of practical items, like a quilt or coat or even sleds or snowshoes. At the time it was made, the object served a specific, practical purpose. Now, generations later, it is wrapped in stories and memories of days gone by.

We are living in unprecedented times. The entire world has been on hold for weeks now. This is definitely one for the history books. Children who haven’t even been thought of yet will ask their parents and grandparents if they remember the great pandemic of 2020.
